Why a new hinge sits proud after you cut the recess

The router bit is round and the hinge leaf is square. That mismatch is why a freshly fitted butt hinge so often stands above the door or jamb when you thought the job was finished.

A man selecting timber boards in a timber yard

A hinge mortise cut with a trim router or a hinge jig follows the radius of the bit, so the corners of the pocket stay rounded. Drop a rectangular hinge in and the leaf can't settle into those corners. It rocks, sits proud of the face, and the door either binds or the gap looks wrong. Squaring the four corners by eye with a chisel is slow — and on a painted door it's easy to go too far.

A spring corner chisel is made for that single cut. Stand the blade in the rounded corner and strike the handle: the spring-loaded blade squares the pocket so the leaf lies flat. It won't replace a licensed carpenter on a structural door, and it isn't a full chisel set. It's the tool for the last few millimetres of a hinge recess.

What this page is selling

This page promotes one product: the Carbatec Double Spring Corner Chisel, £19.99. The wider catalogue is still in the shop if you need a mallet to drive it or a flush-cut saw for the next job — but the button above goes straight to this chisel, not to a mixed list of saws and knives.

How ordering works

Add the chisel to your cart, enter a UK delivery address and place the order. We record it and give you an order number — keep it if you ever need to ask about a return. As the seller we're responsible for your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and you can cancel within 14 days of delivery; any warranty from Carbatec is in addition to those rights.
